Leaving Leelanau


View  From  Storm  Hill


Whenever I leave this little finger of land,

I whisper to the big lake,

In my words or thoughts:

"See you next time."

We are neighbors, the lake and I, ...

But really more like friends.

And, like friends, 

We have our occasional differences.

At times, she can be irascible, brooding,

And, quite literally,

As cold as ice.

But more often,

She is a wise and soothing companion, ...

The sweet water of my life in Leelanau.

Always there.

Waiting, ...

For my return.

In so doing, We take for granted the obvious - That there is something at least semi-solid beneath us: A mountain of sand -  Terra Almost Firma. For the most part, it is immoveable, dependable, Supportive of the weight of our bodies ... And our lives. Even during the most difficult times. Times when, on the other side of the world, The earth is not so dependable - Giving way, And swallowing our sisters and brothers. Here in Leelanau, ... We walk, and climb, and sit on our dunes.
